Bacon Bits - Reconstructing Razorback Nation Reconstructing Razorback Nation Volume LXXXVII December 18, 2007 At least five times I’ve begun to write about my disdain for the hypocritical treatment of new Razorback Coach Bobby Petrino from both ESPN and Atlanta alike. Each of these times I’ve tried to craft my defense of the new coach and why his move here had everything to do with salvaging his family’s life as the Falcons’ ethical structure decayed around him. And each time I’ve stopped. Something else has been tugging at ... (Read the complete article.) Dec 13th, 2007, by Douglas
The Bear's Growl: Negative publicity nationally actually HELPS the U of A, fans... Let me preface this by saying that I do somewhat wish that Petrino's resignation debacle was handled a bit more differently, however, under the current circumstances, I absolutely support him for this. This post/thread, however, isn't going to dip into that aspect heavily; rather, I'm going to focus on the publicity we (as in the University of Arkansas) have been receiving. The old adage "Any kind of publicity is GOOD publicity" ... (Read the complete article.) Dec 13th, 2007, by Neils Boar
Atlanta Falcon Fan and Razorback Fan looking at Bobby Petrino As a Falcon fan, I'm not terribly disappointed to see Petrino leave. He was an odd choice for the Falcons' offensive personnel, even before we found out that Vick couldn't find anything better to do with his $100M contract and free time than to kill puppies. Petrino wants an overpowering offensive line, a power running game, a pocket passer, and playmakers at the WRs. The Falcons have none of that. Their running game was based on the Denver Bronco's schemes with two scat ... (Read the complete article.) Dec 12th, 2007, by whatsshakinbacon
Bacon Bits - Thank You, Santa! Thank You, Santa! Volume LXXXV December 12, 2007 Merry Christmas, Arkansas. It’s been a long time coming. The last time Arkansas made an “A” list hire would arguably be Lou Holtz in 1976. Some 31 years later the Hogs again tapped the NFL ranks for another, only this time one with an impressive college resume’ in his hip pocket. And what a wild ride it’s been getting to this point. In the last few days the Razorback Nation’s head has been on a swivel. Between the parade of coachin... (Read the complete article.) Dec 7th, 2007, by whatsshakinbacon
Bacon Bits - Unlock Us Unlock Us Volume LXXXIV December 7, 2007 My memories of the Arkansas Razorbacks run deep. It has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. At times it has been a source of heartbreak, other times of joyful ebullience. Some game-days have been filled with frustration, other times an excitement that cannot be described. I remember the celebrations from a 1981 victory over number one Texas. And to this day when I recollect Clint Stoerner’s fumble in Knoxville I relive the emotion... (Read the complete article.) Bacon Bits - Poor Little Ole Arkansas Poor Little Ole Arkansas Volume LXXXII November 26, 2007 Well isn’t this fun? Wars and rumors of wars are supposed to mark the end times, are they not? In a microcosmic sort of way, maybe they do mark the end times of an embattled coach at the University of Arkansas. One minute Houston Nutt is given a vote of confidence from the Chancellor and a potential two year extension, the next minute we hear of Jeff Long visiting Bo Pelini to fill the yet to be vacated position. Somebody... (Read the complete article.) Nov 19th, 2007, by whatsshakinbacon
Bacon Bits - The Glass Slipper Fits The Glass Slipper Fits Volume LXXXI November 19, 2007 After a run of bad luck, sometimes it’s hard to actually believe it when good things are happening to you. Two nights ago I watched Cinderella Man. And let me warn you, if you have not watched the movie you best quit reading this column right now, because I will give away the ending. Jim Braddock, played by Russell Crowe, is a depression era fighter who is down on his luck after his boxing career spirals downward. Out of money... (Read the complete article.) Bacon Bits - Roller Coasting With Houston Roller Coasting With Houston Volume LXXX November 11, 2007 Many times before on this board I have held off on posting after a loss. The disappointment skews my perception of what just happened and I find myself regretting statements a day or two down the road. Such is not the case tonight. In the waning moments of the game in Knoxville I watched with little interest. In fact, I’ve watched Sunday afternoon golf with more passion than this SEC match-up. Sure, I wanted to win. The kid... Bacon Bits - The Short List The Short List Volume LXXIX October 24, 2007 It has become increasingly clear that Houston Nutt’s tenure at Arkansas is about to end. Some top boosters and even trustees have quietly let it be known that no turnaround will be enough to save the embroiled coach’s job. The question on the street is no longer whether or not he will return. The focus now is on whom the Razorbacks pluck from the coaching ranks to be our new leader. And before you say this column is jumping the gun, let me... (Read the complete article.) Oct 15th, 2007, by whatsshakinbacon
Bacon Bits - A "Mortal" Victory...What Next? A “Mortal” Victory…What Next? Volume LXXVIII October 15, 2007 Booing is no longer the issue. The wording on the banner, the color of shirts in the stands, the haters from the north all pale in comparison to the fact that Arkansas is simply not getting things done on the field. Whether we pass on first down and who is injured really doesn’t matter anymore. What does matter is Arkansas is 0-3 in the conference and now on the verge of losing a great number of its life-long supporters i... (Read the complete article.) Oct 12th, 2007, by whatsshakinbacon
Bacon Bits - Auburn versus Arkansas Preview Auburn versus Arkansas Preview Volume LXXVIII October 12, 2007 There’s no harder day at work than the Monday you return from a vacation. You get swarmed with phone calls, personnel issues and paperwork. But the hardest part is simply making that adjustment back to reality while visions of white sandy beaches and the sound of waves crash in the back of your mind. Arkansas finds itself in this position Saturday night in Fayetteville when they return to the gridiron with an SEC welcome b... (Read the complete article.) Oct 7th, 2007, by whatsshakinbacon
Bacon Bits - Snakebit Snakebit Volume LXXVII October 7, 2007 I've been to some awful Razorback games in my life. Some wins, most losses. I was there when The Citadel shocked Jack Crowe's Razorbacks in September of '92. I was there in '86 when an anemic but 8th ranked Arkansas lost 17-7 to Texas Tech. In September of 2000 I remember well the precision with which Georgia carved apart my Razorbacks en route to a 38-7 decision. And I was sitting in War Memorial in 2001 to witness what was t...
