Three Razorbacks advance to Olympic finals in long jump, 800-meter

PARIS (KNWA) — A trio of Razorbacks advanced to the finals in their respective events on Sunday at Stade de France.
Wayne Pinnock and Carey McLeod, both representing Jamaica, advanced to Tuesday’s long jump final, placing seventh and 12th in the morning session.
Pinnock reached a distance of 26-1.5 (7.96) in qualifying while McLeod reached 25-11 (7.90). Jarrion Lawson also competed in the event but had three fouls and did not produce a mark in qualifying.

The defending Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo and 2023 world champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece leads the field going into the final with a jump of 27-3.75 (8.32).
Shafiqua Maloney also advanced to the final in her event, the 800-meter.
Maloney surpassed her national record of 1:58.23 by running a 1:57.59 in qualifying in the evening session, the fourth-fastest overall in the 800-meter semifinal.

She became the first athlete from St. Vincent and the Grenadines to reach an Olympic final in any event.

Razorback track & field assistant wins third-consecutive Olympic gold medal in shot put
Here were some other Razorback highlights from Sunday’s events at Stade de France:
Chris Bailey finished in second in his heat in the opening round of the 400-meter with a time of 44.89, 0.11 seconds behind Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith.
Anna Cockrell advanced to the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles with a 53.91 win.
Brittany Brown won her opening heat of the 200-meter with a 22.38, 0.32 seconds ahead of Lanae Tava-Thomas of Jamaica.
Rojé Stona, representing Jamaica, will kick off his race toward a medal in the discus on Monday and Tina Śutej will begin her qualifying in the pole vault.
Razorbacks Amber Anning and Nickisha Pryce will also compete on Monday in the women’s 400-meter first round.
