FAYETTEVILLE – It appears the Arkansas baseball program could be replacing its Golden Spikes winner with an All-American shortstop.
Ball State switch-hitting shortstop Dylan Grego, an All-MAC first-team shortstop and third-team ABCD/Rawlings All-American, announced his commitment to the Razorbacks on Tuesday.
Grego (6-1, 190) hit .376 with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs and stole 15 bases this past season while also being named to the All-MAC defensive team.
The Kansas City native had 91 hits this past season, the third most in Ball State history, and was a career .320 hitter with 22 homers and 87 RBIs in his three years at Ball State.
Grego was also named a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is awarded to the nation’s best collegiate shortstop.
“Dylan Grego had an outstanding season in all facets of the game,” Ball State coach Rich Maloney said. “He was outstanding while hitting from both sides of the plate, his fielding prowess in making only five errors was amazing, and he was a clutch player. Watching Dylan grow as a person and a player has been a joy. This is a tremendous honor and well-deserved.”
Grego would seem a likely replacement for Arkansas shortstop Wehiwa Aloy, who was named the Golden Spikes Award winner Saturday as the top college player.
But there are other candidates, including current Razorback Nolan Souza, Arkansas’ starting second baseman before getting injured this season.
Arkansas has signed McLennan College shortstop Sherman Johnson – named the best defensive player at the NJCAA National Tournament – and Edmond (Okla.) Sante Fe shortstop Carson Brumbaugh, who may be a high draft choice in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft on July 13-14.
Fayetteville’s Landon Schaefer, Ashdown’s Walt Jones and Franklin (Tenn.) University School of Nashville standout Alexander Peck are other 2025 Razorback signees who have played shortstop.
