FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn trotted out junior righty Gage Wood for his second start in as many weekends and he pounded the zone for four innings to help the Gray squad secure a 7-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium.
The main storyline was the Gray team pitching with Wood, Will McEntire and Steele Evans, who combined to toss a one-hit shutout in seven innings of work.
The lone hit was by Cam Kozeal, the second batter for the Cardinal squad, in the top of the first inning, and it was lights out from there.
The second was the bats that came alive in the fifth inning.
Third baseman Brent Iredale ripped open the scoring with a solo homer off Cardinal starter Zach Root.
Root looked great besides the one blemish from Iredale.
Freshman lefty Cole Gibler came in for Root, and they uprooted Gibler from the jump.
Gibler gave up five runs, all earned, allowing two hits, three walks, and two hit batters on 27 pitches.
Rocci Peppi, Kendall Diggs and Ryder Helrick all reached on consecutive at-bats.
Helfrick was replaced with a pinch runner, and he stepped back up to the plate and delivered a two-run single.
Gibler plunked Justin Thomas Jr. and transfer Charles “Chuck” Davalan, who drew a walk to score Diggs.
Wehiwa Aloy smacked a two-run single through the hole to left field to add to the scoring for the Gray team in the fifth.
Kendall Diggs’ solo blast over the right field wall that landed on the roof of the Hunt Complex off of Colin Fisher added to the scoring.
Diggs tagged the off-speed offering from Fisher, who is also coming back from injury.
The Razorbacks will finish up this weekend’s scrimmages with a Sunday finale with the first pitch set for noon.
